Michael Tymn was kind enough to send me a copy of his new book, The Articulate Dead. For those of you not familiar with Michael, he is vice-president of the Academy of Spirituality and Paranormal Studies, Inc., and editor of the Academy’s quarterly magazine, The Searchlight. So, he certainly knows his stuff!
The main focus of The Articulate Dead is presenting the best evidence for post mortem survival gathered during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Michael presents this information in a clear, easy to read style that made his book an absolute pleasure to read.
Upon reading the various accounts of the scientific investigations of such notable mediums as D.D. Home, Leonora Piper and Gladys Osborne Leonard, one cannot help but look at the situation today with some disappointment. But that is another topic entirely….
Beginning with the early pioneers of psychical research, the book moves on to a description of how Spiritualism hit France and Allan Kardec’s involvement. We are then treated to an account of how celebrated scientist Sir William Crookes validated D.D. Home’s mediumship.
The seance on April 12m 1871, Crookes recorded, was the most exciting and satisfactory he had experienced, probably because two other mediums were present and added to Home’s psychic force. At first, they had very rough manifestations, chairs knocking about, a table floating above the floor and then being slammed down, loud and unpleasant noises, what Crookes termed “phenomena of a low class”. It was well known by this time that harmony among the sitters was necessary for good results and this harmony could often be achieved by singing. Thus, they began singing in hopes of improving conditions.
After the group song, Home sung solo, what Crookes referred to as “a sacred piece,” after which one of the other mediums “was carried right up, floated across the table and dropped with a crash of pictures and ornaments at the other end of the room”. When Home sang again, both of the other mediums were lifted up by the invisible spirits and placed on the table. Crookes surmised that the other two mediums brought low-class influences with them and Home’s singing drove them away, allowing his good ones to enter.
Sceptics have always labeled scientists as rather gullible and naive in their ability to detect fraud. This may very well be true in certain cases, but as Michael Tymn describes, strict precautions against fraud were by no means lacking:
When the table was levitating, he [CROOKES] would check Home’s legs and feet to be sure that they were not somehow involved in lifting the heavy table. On several occasions, he also measured the foot pounds of pressure on the table as it levitated. Unlike many mediums, Home did not insist upon darkness and so there was no problem in observing him while the phenomena was taking place.
An interesting footnote to Crooke’s investigations and the sceptics’ attitude is also mentioned - and it is just as relevant today as in the last century.
[Alfred Russel] Wallace defended Crookes and Home against attacks by other scientists who had concluded that Home was a magician. One of them, Sir David Brewster, sat with Home and saw a table levitate right in front of him, but still concluded that since there was no natural explanation for what he saw that Home had to be a magician.
James Randi eat your heart out!
Michael Tymn then continues to fascinate us with accounts of Patience Worth, Frederick Bligh Bond’s excavations of Glastonbury Abbey with the alleged help from spirit helpers and much more. While it is true to say that most of the information can already be found in the literature of the time, it is refreshing to have it all to hand in just one volume.
Michael Tymn brings the events of so long ago back in to modern day focus, and his efforts will delight readers interested in the details surrounding some of the most convincing evidence for life after death. As Michael himself says in his preface, his goal was to “resurrect some of the most interesting and credible personalities and cases in the annals of psychical research from the period 1850 to 1940, what might be called the ‘heyday’ of mediumship, or spirit communications.”
Michael Tymns book certainly lives up to this ambition, and will form a valuable part of any book collection on the history of life after death research.
Certainly, an articulate read!
You can order here via Amazon.com, or through the publisher by clicking here. Michael also has a blog where he regularly delves into the evidence for life after death.
I am always intrigued when sceptics proclaim that they can reproduce the occurrences of the seance room. Commonly, such claims are made by armchair ‘experts’ with no knowledge or experience of the actual events of the modern day seance room.
So sure are they of their superior understanding of how trickery is the only explanation for the phenomena which occur, that they deem it unnecessary to actually attend a seance in order to match their conjecture with actual events.
If they did, they would have to admit that their explanations are lamentably ill-considered and completely irrelevant to the modern day seance room.
A lot of sceptics seem to have a pre-conceived, stereotypical view of seance room phenomena. They seem to think that all that happens is that a few objects - be it a trumpet, tambourine, bell or whatever - move about a bit on the seance table and that’s about it.
‘How can people be so gullible?’ they smile. ‘We can tell you how it’s done!’ They then proceed to offer up explanations of trickery which any schoolboy could have worked out.
The only problem, as I’ve said, is that their explanations don’t actually fit in with what actually occurs in the modern seance room. And indeed, in many cases, the seance rooms of earlier times as well. They are irrelevant because the phenomena produced are totally different - and it is produced in completely different conditions to that which the sceptics portray.
This is not to say that some fraudulent mediums may have used the trickery the sceptics suggest; but to offer up such explanations as damning evidence to denounce all physical mediums is both naive and terribly unfair.
An illustration of my points can be seen in the video, below. In the introduction, the presenter begins by announcing:
“Next, we unmask the seance. A century old scam in which the medium gains the trust of an unsuspecting victim by exposing them to a series of seemingly apparent paranormal occurrences under the shield of darkness. The seance is still very much alive today. Unfortunately, the victim’s loved one is not.”
The statement that they will “unmask the seance” is completely misleading since what they actually “unmask” is not the kind of phenomena which occurs, and has occurred, in various seance rooms across the world.
However, the average viewer with no experience of physical mediumship, can be forgiven for accepting this misleading video as a representation of all which occurs in the seance room; and agreeing with the sceptical view promoted.
Watch it for yourself. Anyone with actual experience of sitting with a physical medium, such as Stewart Alexander for example, will soon see the absurdity of this video as a ‘catch all’ explanation of seance room fraud….
The viewer will note that the trumpet/megaphone does not whizz around the room at high speed, it just ‘limps’ across the table a little. Wow. I have personally witnessed two trumpets flying around a very small seance room at very high speed. The room was so small that all eight sitters completely surrounded the four walls. Yet the trumpets flew about without hitting anyone or the small table in the middle of the room.
I could go further and mention various other phenomena recorded in the history of physical mediumship: Such as the materialisation phenomena of Helen Duncan, which magician and founder of the Magic Circle, Will Goldstone, witnessed and couldn’t explain by normal means.
If the sceptics are going to attempt to debunk physical mediumship fairly, then they should reproduce the exact same phenomena, under the exact same conditions.
Then their arguments would have more substance and relevancy. As it is, videos such as this just illustrate how lame and misleading the sceptical ‘explanation’ of physical phenomena can be. For, far from offering a full and comprehensive debunking of the realities of seance room phenomena, videos such as this merely show the kind of seance a schoolboy would put on for his friends on Halloween.
As a sceptical answer to the more complex happenings of the seance room, this video just leaves us completely in the dark…
A new experiment looking for evidence that telepathy occurs in the brain, has been published in the International Journal of Yoga, by a group at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, in Bangalore, India.
The experimenters used an fMRI scanner to measure brain activity during the experiment. It measures the haemodynamic response related to neural activity in the brain or spinal cord of humans or other animals. It is one of the most recently developed forms of neuroimaging.
In the experiment the Indian investigation team examined a famous “mentalist” while he was performing a telepathic task in the scanner. A matched control subject without this special ability was also examined under similar conditions.
The mentalist, Mr. Gerard Senehi, demonstrated “significant activation of the right parahippocampal gyrus after successful performance of a telepathic task”, the experimenters’ stated.
“The comparison subject, who did not show any telepathic ability, demonstrated significant activation of the left inferior frontal gyrus.”
The report continued:
“To our knowledge, this is the first fMRI study to examine the brain correlates of telepathy. Previous studies have employed other functional brain mapping techniques. In our study, telepathy was associated with significant activation of the right parahippocampal gyrus; whereas the control subject without telepathic ability, activated the left inferior frontal gyrus under similar task conditions.”
The conclusion of the experimenters was that “The findings of this study are suggestive of a limbic basis for telepathy and warrant further systematic research.”

Harry Price Interview…

News reaches me that the Crown Publishing Group has acquired the rights to the non-fiction book by screenwriter David Jehar about the controversial physical medium ‘Margery’ Crandon.
According to Mr. Jehar the advance he was paid for his book was in the “high six figures.”
He said his book will tell the story of Harry Houdini’s campaign to discredit ‘Margery’, who made the front page of the New York Times in the 1920s as the controversy over her mediumship reached fever pitch.
The book depicts the real-life confrontation between the magician and the Boston medium, casting a light on a moment in history when science seemed on the verge of embracing the paranormal.
The book, unfortunately entitled The Witch of Lime Street, will be out in early 2010, Mr. Jehar said.
One hopes that this new book will not just cover the same old ground as previous books/articles on the Margery mediumship, and will offer new information and insights regarding this extraordinary woman.
Unrelated Video: Houdini Investigates Medium…
I have sat in circle to develop clairvoyance at the Newton Abbot Spiritualist Church in Devon for over two years now, and felt blessed that I had the opportunity to sit with physical medium Stewart Alexander, for what would likely be his last public demonstration.
It was particularly poignant for me since the last time he demonstrated at the Newton Abbot Church in November of 2007, I met my absolute soul mate, who had flown over from New York, just to attend the séance. What a joy then, to be sitting there with him again, almost a year later.
Before entering the séance room, we all emptied our pockets and removed all jewelry. We were then thoroughly searched in order to make sure that absolutely nothing was brought into the séance room. The spirit people that come through Stewart use ectoplasm to materialize and speak, and it is well known that if ectoplasm is exposed to light, it can shoot back into the medium’s body at great speed potentially causing internal bleeding or even death. It was of paramount importance to keep Stewart as safe as possible at all times.
The sitters were then addressed by a gentleman named Alf, who was one of Stewart’s circle members. He explained to the new sitters that we would be sitting in complete darkness for an extended period of time. He gave sitters who had never attended a physical séance before, the opportunity to leave if they thought they could not tolerate sitting under these conditions. Whilst a couple of new sitters acknowledged that they were somewhat apprehensive, the atmosphere of the room was full of eager anticipation and excitement. He explained what was likely to happen, but offered no guarantees, then discussed the do’s and don’ts of séance protocol. Stewart sat in the chair, his arms and legs bound firmly by plastic cable ties.
These were thoroughly checked by one of the sitters. He also had illuminated stripes taped to his knees so the sitters could see in the darkness his location and what position he was in. It was confirmed by some of the sitters that these cable ties were very secure. There was no reason whatsoever to suspect any type of fraud or anything remotely suspicious.
White feather was the first spirit to come through, a Native American Indian who noted how exceptionally good the energy was. He acts as a gatekeeper between our two worlds. White feather then withdrew to allow Christopher to come through. He is a charming young boy of about seven years, whose job it is to relax the sitters. His high pitched, impish voice and cheeky laughter had us all laughing and helped to raise the vibration in the room even higher. He joked with several sitters but he was instructed after only a few minutes by his spirit team that he had to withdraw. Music was then played and we all sang. A short time later, a gentleman named Walter Stinson came through. He was a Canadian who passed over to the spirit world in 1911.
He is a member of Stewart’s spirit team and is responsible for all physical phenomena that may take place during a séance. He is a powerful character and is known to be rather flirtatious with the ladies. He invited any ladies to ask him a question and one of the sitters was invited to sit beside him on his right side. After addressing the questions she had for him, he requested that the red light be switched on, which was located under a glass topped table located in front of the medium. There was a rheostat controlling the intensity of the red light and this was switched on in order to allow everyone to see the two plastic binds connecting Stewart’s arms to the chair. The sitter also confirmed this by touching the ties and checking them to make sure that they were still binding Stewart to the chair.
The red light was then switched off and there was a noise. The sitter then said that the arm was raised swiftly up into the air. Stewart’s arm was free from the plastic cable ties that bound him to the chair. His left arm was still firmly attached to the arm of the chair by the cable tie. This was an evidential demonstration of matter through matter. The red light was switched off and the audible ectoplasmic rush was heard again. A sitter then confirmed that the arm was back on the armrest bound like before. The red light was again turned on and everyone could see the arm fastened to the chair by the cable ties once again. Stewart Alexander was in trance whilst all this was happening and all direction and instructions were from Walter.
We were then instructed by Walter to lay our hands with palms uppermost on our laps. The trumpets were placed between the feet of the medium and we were invited to sing in order to help raise the energy levels again and increase the vibration in the room. We could see two trumpets levitate and swiftly dance around the room at great speed never bumping into one another. They danced over the heads of the sitters. It should be noted that the ceiling was at least 30 foot high and they were flying right to the ceiling and darting down again very quickly.
Dr Barnett, another member of Stewart’s spirit team who is very philosophical, also came through to speak with us. Next came Freda Johnson. She reunited two sitters with loved ones. It was very emotional for those concerned, as well as everyone else in the room. One of the ladies sitting to the right of me was aware of her son who had passed over and was trying to get through. He was experiencing some difficulty and was invited by Freda to speak to her later after the séance had ended. Stewart would attempt again to bring him through in a private sitting. The other sitters remained in their seats after the séance and the lady was invited through to a small ante room with Stewart. She returned obviously very emotional and confirmed that her son had spoken to her.
Walter Stinson’s voice spoke again and invited the ladies once again to ask him a question. I asked a question and to my surprise and delight, he asked me to join him at the front of the room at the glass top table. He answered my question which was relating to how I might best serve the world of spirit and then asked me if I would like to view his materialized hand. I sat opposite him with the illuminated glass topped table between us. The energy was palpable as I sat down and my legs started to shake uncontrollably. I was asked by Walter to place one hand on the table and describe to the other sitters what I saw. An undefined black shadow started to form to the left of the table and slowly started to morph with slight projections. The projections elongated and became finger like, and then a fully formed claw like male looking hand materialized.
The materialized hand crawled across the table onto my hand, and proceeded to pat it three times. It felt warm to the touch and exactly as a normal human hand would look. I could even see the hairs on the back of the hand. It then proceeded to knock the table firmly and loudly which was met by audible exclamations of amazement by my fellow sitters. I feel totally blessed to have experienced this amazing phenomena. Walter spoke to me in his distinctive Canadian brawl and asked “Didn’t you ever want to shake the hand of a man who had been dead for more than a hundred years now, ma’ am, hmm?” Everyone found this very amusing and I for one was buzzing from the whole experience. I kept asking myself how many people in the world have had an experience like this. How lucky am I? I can confirm that this was not the hand of the medium, Stewart Alexander. If this wasn’t enough, he then asked for my new found soul mate Ken to come up. Out of all the sitters the two of us were seated opposite this amazing man from the spirit world, waiting in anticipation for the next demonstration. He then invited Ken’s “betrothed” to sit next to him. Ken and I had discussed getting married however had not made any formal plans or announcements yet so to have someone from the spirit realms acknowledge our intent rendered us totally speechless.
I was unable to respond since I was so overcome with emotion. I recognized Sheila’s voice, one of the administrators of the church call out “She is already there”! Ken was positioned opposite Walter and he invited another female sitter named Heather to sit to the left of the medium. We were then invited to place our hands flat on the table with our thumbs touching and our little fingers touching that of our neighbors. The table started to move, pushing against my knees quite firmly. It then moved backwards and forwards and proceeded to levitate. We all sat there mystified. All of us aware that we couldn’t possibly have lifted the table with both hands flat on the table ourselves. We were then invited to take our seats again.
Ken was addressed again by Walter and he stated “Ken, you are not going to believe what is in store for you in the future!” He did not elaborate on this but filled us both with eager anticipation. He also said “When your big day arrives, and you KNOW what I mean by this, will I be invited?” He was relating to our aspirations of getting married. After the séance, Ken and I discussed the odds of how many weddings there had ever been when someone from the world of spirit asked if they could attend. When the time is right, we will of course be inviting Walter, and know FOR SURE that he will be there in spirit.
What a totally amazing evening. One that the two of us will remember for eternity, made so very special by the personal messages. It was my third demonstration of physical mediumship and my second demonstration of ectoplasmic, materialization mediumship, and I can say that with absolute certainty that I never, at any time, suspected any type of fraud taking place. It has confirmed my knowingness, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that our soul and our etheric spirit body are eternal, and that we all survive physical death.
I want to take this opportunity to express my sincerest thanks and praise to Stewart Alexander for his hard work and tireless dedication over the years, in developing his gift and demonstrating it publically, and in bringing the two worlds together and unwittingly two very, very happy people that otherwise, would never have met.
After fifteen years of public séances across the United Kingdom and abroad, physical medium Stewart Alexander has “no regrets” over his decision to retire from large scale demonstrations.
Speaking about his last public séance, held in Devon last month, Stewart said:
“I have to tell you that for me it was somewhat emotional as you can imagine. From start to last, both my friends Alf and June and I met with considerable kindness and we knew that everyone who attended the events did so because they genuinely were taking the opportunity to hear about and experience the physical phenomena of the séance room.
“From what I understand - the spirit world responded and produced séances that I know will never be forgotten by anyone who attended. The final day at the Newton Abbot Church was a full day seminar with me, Alf Winchester, and Peter Egan giving various talks followed by the evening séance.
“What a wonderful day it was - for me it was literally like ‘home from home’ and I had no fears of sitting for them. The planning for the day and the preparation of the Church was undertaken by Sheila and Phil Scott (President and Vice President) and their team and - it must be said - that they did a wonderful job.
“Whatever success we had on the day - they all truly deserved. For me - it was literally the end of an era.
“I spent so many months agonising over this matter - was I doing the correct thing or was I being selfish? These were the questions that revolved constantly around my mind. But - I have to say that now - following Devon - I feel a tremendous relief that for 15 years I worked publicly and that I have come out the other end unscathed.
“I have definitely done the correct thing - I have no doubt. And if - people wish to sit with me then they can still do so but not at the large public séances that I have done for so long.
“Of course, the sceptics will place a different interpretation upon my decision to withdraw but that is of absolutely no concern to me. Sceptics are sceptics and will - with their open minds that are ever willing to be convinced - remain sceptics until they themselves pass into that world that awaits us all beyond death.
“I have no interest in their self opinionated pronouncements, delivered always with such certainty, and of their veiled dishonesty which equally matches that of the gullible Spiritualist who performs such a terrible disservice to the movement of Spiritualism.”
Stay tuned for forthcoming reports of Stewart’s final séance…
